Psalm 145
Psalm 145
1 I will extol you, my God and King,
and bless your name forever and ever.
2 Every day I will bless you,
and praise your name forever and ever.
3 Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;
his greatness is unsearchable.
4 One generation shall laud your works to another,
and shall declare your mighty acts.
5 On the glorious splendor of your majesty,
and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.
6 The might of your awesome deeds shall be proclaimed,
and I will declare your greatness.
7 They shall celebrate the fame of your abundant goodness,
and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.
8 The Lord is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
9 The Lord is good to all,
and his compassion is over all that he has made.
10 All your works shall give thanks to you, O Lord,
and all your faithful shall bless you.
11 They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom,
and tell of your power,
12 to make known to all people your mighty deeds,
and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and your dominion endures throughout all generations.
The Lord is faithful in all his words,
and gracious in all his deeds.
14 The Lord upholds all who are falling,
and raises up all who are bowed down.
15 The eyes of all look to you,
and you give them their food in due season.
16 You open your hand,
satisfying the desire of every living thing.
17 The Lord is just in all his ways,
and kind in all his doings.
18 The Lord is near to all who call on him,
to all who call on him in truth.
19 He fulfills the desire of all who fear him;
he also hears their cry, and saves them.
20 The Lord watches over all who love him,
but all the wicked he will destroy.
21 My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord,
and all flesh will bless his holy name forever and ever.

Today is December 15. It may seem like an ordinary day to you but not to me. It’s my mother, Sharen Niebauer’s, birthday. It seemed appropriate to choose her birthday and these words. It’s because of her that I am here, not only on the earth but at church. She started taking us to church when I was in first grade. (Dad started going later.) Because of her and some amazing Sunday School teachers and pastors, I learned about God’s mighty works, majesty, and awesome deeds. I learned about love and forgiveness. I learned about Advent and Christmas.
Advent meant candles: Prophecy, Bethlehem, Shepherds, Angels, and Christ. It meant special music. It meant caroling, usually to the shut-ins. It was a time of expectation and excitement. There was even excitement in stores and malls. Decorations didn’t come out until after Thanksgiving. It was exciting to see what decorations they put up. As I write this and think about those times “so long ago,” I think we have lost a lot of what I remember.
If my grandchildren are going to experience an Advent Adventure, it will be because the generations before them share the story and tell of God’s wonders. They need to hear not only that Christ came as an infant but that He is coming again, that Advent reminds us of a time long ago and a promise of a future.
Because of my mother’s faithfulness and dedication, I heard the Christmas story, meditated on it and memorized it. It was read or recited every year before we opened gifts. Now I do the same thing with my grandchildren. I declare the greatness of the Lord, at home and in the pulpit. Happy Birthday, Mom and thanks for showing me what Psalm 145 means!
Lord, As we come today to reflect on Advent, help us to remember that we need to tell others of your majesty and greatness. Help us feel your love and find adventure in Advent. Show us how to proclaim your love to new generations. Amen

1 I was glad when they said to me,
“Let us go to the house of the LORD!”
2 Our feet are standing
within your gates, O Jerusalem.
3 Jerusalem — built as a city
that is bound firmly together.
4 To it the tribes go up,
the tribes of the LORD,
as was decreed for Israel,
to give thanks to the name of the LORD.
5 For there the thrones for judgment were set up,
the thrones of the house of David.
6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
“May they prosper who love you.
7 Peace be within your walls,
and security within your towers.”
8 For the sake of my relatives and friends
I will say, “Peace be within you.”

15"So when you see the desolating sacrilege standing in the holy place, as was spoken of by the prophet Daniel (let the reader understand), 16then those in Judea must flee to the mountains; 17the one on the housetop must not go down to take what is in the house; 18the one in the field must not turn back to get a coat. 19Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing infants in those days! 20Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a sabbath. 21For at that time there will be great suffering, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. 22And if those days had not been cut short, no one would be saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short. 23Then if anyone says to you, 'Look! Here is the Messiah!' or 'There he is!' — do not believe it. 24For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and produce great signs and omens, to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. 25Take note, I have told you beforehand. 26So, if they say to you, 'Look! He is in the wilderness,' do not go out. If they say, 'Look! He is in the inner rooms,' do not believe it. 27For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 28Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.

1 I waited patiently for the LORD;
he inclined to me and heard my cry.

and set my feet upon a rock,

a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear,
and put their trust in the LORD.

the LORD their trust,
