Morning Psalm 122
Morning Psalm 122
1 I was glad when they said to me,
“Let us go to the house of the LORD!”
2 Our feet are standing
within your gates, O Jerusalem.
3 Jerusalem — built as a city
that is bound firmly together.
4 To it the tribes go up,
the tribes of the LORD,
as was decreed for Israel,
to give thanks to the name of the LORD.
5 For there the thrones for judgment were set up,
the thrones of the house of David.
6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
“May they prosper who love you.
7 Peace be within your walls,
and security within your towers.”
8 For the sake of my relatives and friends
I will say, “Peace be within you.”
9 For the sake of the house of the LORD our God,
I will seek your good.

When my husband and I moved to Western New York a couple of years ago, one of the first things on my list was to find a church. Being completely new to the area, we knew it would be a way to meet new friends who shared our values and give us opportunities for service. We wanted to use the gifts and talents God has blessed us with to help others and grow the church we joined. And we were looking for people like us, who we might connect with and be friends with.
We visited many congregations, looking for a place where we might fit. We were looking for a church where it felt vibrant and active. It didn’t need to be big, but it needed to feel like the community of the church was open to growth. We wanted a place that was focused outward, and would welcome what we had to offer.
We found our community at Lewiston First Presbyterian Church. What impressed me was that every idea we brought was met with “Sure, we can try that, and how can I help?” and not, “we’ve never done it that way.” People in the congregation stepped up to help us try these new ideas. We were embraced, loved, and found our community. Our church is growing as we try new things and reach out to our wider area. And when new families visit for the first time, they see that people are there and participating. It feels like somewhere you can get involved, and people are invited to be part of things.

It’s a great reminder that each of us is an essential component to the growth of our church. We can’t wait for someone else to do it. It takes each one of us. Your presence and participation are part of the formula. When people come for the first time, they want to see who else is there. The reality is that if your church feels empty, they probably aren’t coming back. This Advent, I encourage you to show up for your community. Be present in worship. Volunteer. When new people come they’ll be looking to see who else is there. Will they find you?

1 I waited patiently for the LORD;

and put their trust in the LORD.

your mercy from me;

my iniquities have overtaken me,

they are more than the hairs of my head,
and my heart fails me.
