For Immediate Release

The Presbytery of Western New York, at its March 28 meeting, unanimously endorsed the complete excavation of nuclear waste at the West Valley Demonstration Project located in Cattaraugus and southern Erie counties.

Citing their "Christian commitment to caring for creation," the resolution passed by the presbytery stated that the West Valley site "presents a moral imperative to act responsibly based on the best information available currently, as part of our compact with future generations."

The presbytery supports the  full clean up of the entire West Valley site, known in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement as the "Sitewide Removal Alternative."  Choosing this alternative empowers the DOE with a clear directive to focus now on excavating all nuclear wastes and preparing them properly for eventual storage at a safe location.

The presbytery will communicate this resolution to the Congressional delegation of Western New York, as well as to President Obama.

Passage of this resolution continues a long history of support by Presbyterians for cleanup of the West Valley site, beginning in 1993 when the presbytery joined in the successful opposition to a proposal by New York State to dump more nuclear waste at the site.
