In these times of civil, social and economic unrest, we turn to the words of great poets, philosophers, and biblical writers and the music of great composers to help us cope with our fears. Guided by this inspiration, the Westminster Presbyterian Church Choir and the Ars Nova Musicians Chamber Orchestra will present a Concert for Peace on Sunday, March 15 at 7:00.pm at Westminster Church featuring the poignant and timely writings of Walt Whitman, Daniel Berrigan, Abraham Lincoln, Emily Dickinson, John Bright, St. Francis of Assisi, and numerous Scriptural authors. The principal works on the program include Ralph Vaughan Williams’ anguished and impassioned plea for peace, Dona Nobis Pacem. This work was written in the late 30s as the world seemed set to explode into what would become World War II. Also performed will be Daniel Moe’s moving Cantata of Peace, written in 1971 as the seemingly endless Vietnam war dragged on into its 11th year and so many lives were being sacrificed. Featured artists include narrators John Horn, Dr. Thomas Yorty (pastor of the church), and Cristanne Miller (UB professor and Dickinson scholar). Soloists include Maggie Zindle (soprano) and Victor Schuel (baritone). Accompanying will be the strings of the magnificent Ars Nova Musicians Chamber Orchestra (Marylouise Nanna, conductor) and Paul Schlossman (oboist). Richard Herr is conducting the large ensemble at the performance.
