First United Church, 35 Park Place, Silver Creek, NY (The Church on the Square) is planning two major events. The United Angels Youth Group is having a Food Drive on Oct 3rd, at noon for the Silver Creek Food Pantry. In addition, they are holding a “Spaghetti and Meatball or Chicken and Biscuit Dinner,” Sunday, October 18th, from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm. The “International Friendship Bread” program includes welcome letters and personal assistance, when needed. UPC is planning an Alternative Holiday Gift Fair for Sunday, November 1st. Items from around the world that benefit those in great need will be available for purchase. Don’t forget Krolick’s Chicken Dinner on Saturday, October 3rd, from noon to 4 PM, and also, the Greater Buffalo Counseling Center’s Sixth Annual Awards Dinner (October 21st at 6 PM at Salvatore’s Italian Gardens) that will recognize Rev. Tracy Daub and the support she and UPC have shown for the counseling program. At First Presbyterian Church - Lockport, Rev. W. James Hardy will be sponsoring the first Dollar Dinner on October 7, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. He will provide a dish to pass at this initial gathering and would ask others to join him on that evening with a dish to share. Leith Fujii, a Presbyterian missionary stationed in Thailand. The proposed schedule is, as follows: Friday October 2 - Travel to Western New York from Lackawanna Presbytery; Potluck dinner at 6 pm at North Church – Williamsville. Saturday October 3 - Extreme Makeover, Prayer Edition – Leith will be one of the Presenters at Ebenezer UCC Church, 650 Main Street, West Seneca. Afternoon and evening are free. Sunday, October 4 - Arrangements are in the works for Sunday morning but if you need a preacher, let Mary Lee Talbot know. Evening – PYC Hunger Dinner at Orchard Park. Monday, October 5 - Lots of time here! Tuesday October 6 - Time during the day. Evening is in the works. Wednesday, October 7 - Lectionary Group at Faith United. Evening – Dessert and presentation at First Presbyterian, Westfield. Thursday, October 8 - Opening during the day. Evening at Randolph. Those projects or organizations that received their 25% allocation for donations that remained locally are, as follows: Orchard Park - Nathaniel Houghton Cornellians for the Congo (creating leadership programs for youth to break the cycle of conflict and despair) Buffalo-University and Williamsville-North - WNY Peace Center Camp PeacePrints Kenmore - purchased a Peace Pole for the church (Dedication is scheduled for World Communion Sunday) Jamestown-First - World Vision (The donation was matched by the Conrad Hilton Foundation for this program that sponsors well drilling and sanitation instruction in Ghana, Mali, Niger, and Ethiopia.) Portville-First - Southern Tier Military Support. (Special Note: Their Mission Committee spends a month studying and interpreting Peacemaking to their congregation. Last year's goal was $634, which they exceeded in raising $837. They increase their goal approx. 15% each year. This year's goal is $710 - their 25% portion will go to Southern Tier Legal Services.) Former pastors Rev. Dr. John L. Schmidt and Rev. Dr. George H. McConnel delivered sermons focusing on the future of the church, rather than the past. Presiding pastor Rev. Thomas A. Sweet welcomed six new members to the congregation: Marlie Bendiksen, Nan Eaker, Karin Johnson, Harry and Marion Olson, and Sharon Weiler. A banner reflecting important events in the life of the congregation was created by Sheila Dunn, Cyndi Lorenc, and Sue Kellogg. Also participating in the service were Shari Erickson, Parish Nurse; Elder Sherwood Cadwell; Michelle Buhite, Pastoral Associate in Spiritual Nurture and Youth; Rev. Donald E. Ray, Pastoral Associate in Worship and Pastoral Care; Libby Nord, dancer; Claire Murray, Carrie Pawelski, and Lucille Miller, instrumentalists; Cynthia Lind Hanson, Minister of Music; and the Chancel Choir. Following the service was a dinner planned and served by Sandy Merwin, members of the Hospitality and Fellowship Committee, and volunteers from the congregation, youth program, and the community.
