Presbytery of Western New York E-Newsletter August 18, 2009 Flooding in Gowanda, Cattaraugus Reservation and Silver Creek The flood waters of August 9 are receding but the work of clean up will be ongoing in the towns of Gowanda and Silver Creek and on the Cattaraugus Territory in Irving. The town of Gowanda was severely flooded and the Presbyterian Church had 18 inches of water in the basement. Wright Memorial Church in Irving did not sustain damage but road damage around the reservation cut people off from each other. In Silver Creek the Presbyterian Church is at the center of the clean up and relief work. Work crews from Presbyterian Churches were in Gowanda as early as Tuesday, August 11. Janita Byars, poet of transformation with the presbytery, and Patsy Lane from Jamestown First worked along with Marilyn Hale and 12 people from Portville and Dorothy and Laura Pearman and folks from Maryvale Presbyterian Church. Dale Francis and members of the Dunkirk church arrived mid-week to help. Jan Tyson, presbytery office administrative assistant, travelled with two representatives of Presbyterian Disaster Assistance to Gowanda on Saturday, August 15 to determine longer-term needs from their standpoint.
We already are aware that clean up will be needed for the next couple of weeks – week day clean up help is required as well as weekend clean up help. Please start coordinating teams of helpers now – help is greatly needed. PDA will provide t-shirts by the middle of the week. Please coordinate these teams with Jan in the Presbytery office (668-1995). It is essential that you call before you come! Check the latest news on the Presbytery website under “Flood Relief Information .” Monetary donations to aid both the Gowanda and Silver Creek churches are needed. Please send them to the Presbytery office for distribution. Please include these communities in your prayers. Habitat Buffalo Women Build in 2010 Habitat Buffalo will have a Women Build in 2010.
