CAMP DUFFIELD GOES GREEN (Actually, we have been green since someone planted a pine forest 40-plus years ago.) Of the 137 acres that is Camp Duffield, approximately 130 acres are covered with a canopy of trees. Therefore, we have established a long term forest management plan,to provide wood for commercial markets, while maintaining the beauty of Camp Duffield. In addition, we have rebuilt the fireplace in Keeler Lodge to provide the ambiance of a classic retreat lodge. We have also added a wood firebox to Janeway Mess Hall to take the chill out of that building in the spring and fall. Heating the on-site buildings using waste wood takes us one step closer to being truly “green.” (Our water craft are also biologically-propelled, using only the p & j served daily in Janeway Mess Hall.)

CHURCH IN THE WOODS A TREMENDOUS SUCCESS Photos and story by Jack Berger Thanks for a bright summer Sunday morning , the more the than usual word of mouth about a new adventure and yes.. Facebook! Randolph Presbyterians discovered the attendance at their Church in the Woods church service was far more than anything they ever dreamed of. Parishioners were overwhelmed to find the estimated 30 or 40 they expected turned out to be between 80 and 90! Amazing, when we make an effort...God does surprise us! Worshipers sat on neatly varnished log benches in front of a custom built podium used by Pastor Leslie Latham, a small keyboard was available for organist Michele Sandberg, special singers Al and Elaine Crossley, a tent for the dish-to-pass lunch and, of course, a lot of beautiful thick green forest for young people to romp in once the worship service was over. Hosts were parishioners Clair and Linda Inkley who thought their Golden Birch Chapel would be ideal for this summer outdoor worship. In fact, the Inkley's also furnished the staple food for the lunch. The eighth of a mile trail to the to the chapel would be very difficult for the elderly or handicapped. The Inkley's solved this problem with two "Green Machines," giving anyone who had difficulty a smooth ride down the steep and narrow two-track dirt path from the parking lot to the chapel park. With the help of his family, The Golden Birch Chapel was built a few years ago by son Martyn Inkley, who was married in this pristine forest setting. The Inkley's have shared their beautiful facility with the community ever since.
