Domestic Violence

"None of us as helpers should ever put a battered woman in the position of having to choose between her safety and the support of her religious community. She needs both the safety and the support of her church or synagogue, and it is up to us to provide that."

–Rev. Marie M. Fortune, Founder of the Center for the Prevention of Sexual and Domestic Violence (now know as Faith Trust Institute)

  • Statistics

  • Every 18 seconds a woman is beaten…3-4 million women are battered each year.
  • The number one health risk to women in the U.S. is violent attacks by men. The Surgeon General’s office reported that domestic violence causes more injuries to women than rapes, muggings and car accidents combined.
  • As many as one-third of all women will be physically assaulted by a partner or ex-partner during their lifetime.
  • Approximately 95% of the victims of domestic violence are women.
  • Nationally, 75% of battered women say that their children are also battered.
  • Between 22% and 35 % of women visiting hospital emergency rooms are there due to injuries sustained as a result of domestic violence.
